Chapter 8: Encouraging and responding to questions

The ongoing conversation

My teenage son opens up more when we're in the car so this is where I check-in with him every now and then.

After that first conversation, it’s best not to assume that your child will come back to you later on with questions. Even if it went well, they may hesitate to revisit the conversation, sometimes out of concern that they’ll upset you.

Check-in occasionally to remind your child that they can share their questions and worries with you. This gives them the message that:

  • They’re important.
  • It’s safe to approach the key adults in their life.
